Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, June 28: The Aurangabad Caves are among the city's most significant heritage monuments, housing two of the world's most remarkable sculptures in Cave No. 7. Unfortunately, despite their global importance, many local residents remain unaware of their historical and artistic value. Citizens, including children, are the true brand ambassadors of these heritage sites, and it is their responsibility to share the rich legacy of the caves with others, said Dr. Sanjay Paikrao, Secretary of the Idol and Sculpture Research Institute.
The Shaharanama team organised its second Heritage Walk and Photo Walk on Sunday at Caves Nos. 6 to 10 of the Aurangabad Caves, located near Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The initiative was jointly organised by the Department of History and Archaeology, MGM University, Akhyan Foundation, Garware Community Centre, Rotary Club of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar East, Adguide Media Pvt. Ltd., and the India Tourism Department. The programme was attended by Sunil Sutawane, Director of Garware Community Centre; Assistant Professor Ashutosh Patil from the Department of History and Archaeology, MGM University; Om Pardeshi of Adguide Media; Nivrutti Gajbhare, President of Rotary Club of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar East; and Snehal Patil, Senior Officer, India Tourism Department.
During the walk, Dr. Paikrao explained the history, art, architecture, and archaeological significance of the Aurangabad Caves. He remarked that one must first develop an appreciation for heritage to truly understand its value. Viewed through an artistic lens, the sculptures in the caves appear vibrant and expressive. He noted that the Aurangabad Caves are mentioned in inscriptions related to the Kanheri Caves and are believed to date from the 6th to the 8th century CE. Carved from basalt rock, the sculptures feature intricate ornaments and elaborate hairstyles that demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship.
According to scholars, some sculptures in the Aurangabad Caves surpass even those at Ajanta in artistic excellence. Among them, the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva sculpture in Cave No. 7 is regarded as one of the finest in India. It is traditionally believed that Avalokiteshvara protects devotees from the Eight Great Perils (Ashta Bhaya). Dr. Paikrao stated that this sculpture is considered superior to similar depictions found at Ajanta, Kanheri, and Ellora. The cave also features the renowned Rajanartika Dance Panel, admired by researchers for its artistic brilliance and its powerful expression of feminine grace and freedom.
He further explained that Cave No. 6, popularly known as the Ganapati Cave, was identified during the 1960s by Dr. Ramesh Gupte.
During the event, Minal Nikam, winner of Shaharanama's first Photo Walk competition, was felicitated by the dignitaries. Sudhir Kortikar also entertained participants by demonstrating the calls of various bird species.
