History of Khandoba Temple in Satara Village Revived
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug. 9: Khandoba Temple in Satara village is a revered shrine and beloved deity for lakhs of devotees. Although the temple, established by Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar, is renowned far and wide, many people often do not get an opportunity to visit it. Senior citizens and history enthusiasts were introduced to the history of the temple, legends associated with it and its major festivals through a special Heritage Walk organized by Shaharnama. The temple is regarded as the seventh among the twelve important shrines of Khandoba.
The fourth Heritage Walk by Shaharnama was organized at the renowned Khandoba Temple in Satara village. This edition of the walk was specially dedicated to senior citizens, who participated in large numbers. The initiative was jointly organized by the Department of History and Archaeology, MGM University; Aakhyan Foundation; Garware Community Centre; Rotary Club of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar East; AdGuide Media Pvt. Ltd.; and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
Historian Umesh Patwardhan and archaeologist Ashutosh Patil guided the participants during the walk. The Heritage Walk began at the Dandekar Wada, located close to the temple. Varsha Dandekar, Ashish Dandekar and Sandeep Dandekar were present on the occasion. Sandeep Dandekar spoke about the famous Ganesh idol housed in the wada.
The Dandekar Wada houses a Peshwa-era Ganesh idol with the trunk turned towards the right. The idol was originally entrusted to Narayan Dixit, who was a jagirdar at the time. Worship of a right-trunk Ganesh idol requires strict adherence to rituals and discipline. For certain reasons, the idol was later handed over by the Dixit family to the ancestors of the Dandekars. Since then, six generations of the Dandekar family have continued to worship the idol. Sandeep Dandekar said that the wada is believed to be around 300 years old.
He further explained that during the time of Narayan Dixit, the Khandoba Temple was located at Kadepathar in the nearby Kaas region, which is considered the original shrine. Narayan Dixit would regularly travel to Kadepathar to worship the deity. According to the legend, his unwavering devotion led him to believe that the deity had instructed him to bring the temple down from the hill, resulting in the establishment of the present Khandoba Temple.
Every year, the idols from the Khandoba Temple are brought to the Dandekar Wada, where rituals and worship are performed before the idols are ceremonially taken back to the temple. After visiting the beautiful Ganesh stepwell in the village, an aarti was performed at the Khandoba Temple.
Historian Umesh Patwardhan also stated that the Ganesh idol at Dandekar Wada is believed to have been worshipped by Peshwa Bajirao I. He said that the present Khandoba Temple was built by Ahilyabai Holkar around 1766, while the original temple is located at Kadepathar and is also architecturally magnificent.
Temple priest Vishal Dhumal narrated various legends associated with the temple. He explained that the Khandoba Temple houses idols of Khandoba and Mhalsa Devi, while the temple at Kadepathar has idols of Mhalsa and Banai Devi, which is one of its distinctive features.
He further informed the participants that Champashashti, Bangar Sat, Paush Purnima, Chaitra Purnima and the Kadepathar Yatra are among the important festivals associated with the temple.
The Heritage Walk concluded with a traditional Gondhal performance based on the legends of Khandoba. The Shaharnama team appealed to citizens to visit and explore heritage sites within their own city and help keep history alive. While people often travel across the world, the city itself is home to beautiful heritage sites that deserve to be explored and preserved. The senior citizens particularly enjoyed the experience of learning about the history and traditions associated with Khandoba Temple.
Director of Garware Community Centre Sunil Sutawane and Ramakant Rautalle, senior tourism officer Snehal Patil from the Ministry of Tourism, Director of MGM Science Centre Srinivas Aundhkar, President Pragatishil Senior Citizens Charitable Organization Pramod V. Bhende and team, Rajshree Agrawal, Khandoba Temple Secretary Sahebrao Palaskar and local resident Vijay Sonawane were present on the occasion.
