Heritage Walk to Bibi Ka Maqbara

30 September 2026

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, September 30: On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Team Shaharnama organised a special heritage walk for students at the world-famous Bibi Ka Maqbara on Tuesday. More than 60 students participated enthusiastically in the initiative. The heritage walk was jointly organised by the Department of History and Archaeology, MGM University; Aakhyan Foundation; Garware Community Centre; AdGuide Media Pvt. Ltd.; the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; and Team Shaharnama.

Sunil Sutawane, Director of Garware Community Centre; Ramakant Rautalle; Snehal Patil, Assistant Director, India Tourism; and Om Pardeshi of AdGuide Media were present on the occasion.

More than 60 students and teachers from Dnyaneshwar Primary and Secondary School, Begumpura, participated in the walk. The primary objective was to familiarise students with the history, architecture and heritage of their city through an on-site learning experience.

Archaeologist Prof. Ashutosh Patil provided detailed insights into the history, architectural design and cultural significance of Bibi Ka Maqbara. The monument holds a special place among the historical landmarks of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. It was built in memory of Dilras Banu Begum, the wife of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who was also known as Rabia-ud-Durrani. She passed away in 1657.

During the walk, students learned about the structure of the central dome, the minarets on all four sides, the entrance gateway, the use of marble and the overall architectural planning of the monument. The design of the tomb, surrounded by an intricately carved marble screen at the centre of the structure, helped students understand the distinctive features of the architectural traditions of that period.

Although Bibi Ka Maqbara is often compared with the Taj Mahal, students were also informed about the differences between the two monuments in terms of their periods of construction, materials, architectural techniques and proportions.

The session further highlighted how historical monuments can serve as valuable sources for understanding the past. Through practical examples, students learned how architectural elements such as stonework, arches, domes, lattice screens, water systems and landscape planning reveal different dimensions of history. The importance of Bibi Ka Maqbara, its surroundings and other historical monuments in shaping the historical identity of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was also emphasised.

The students actively participated by asking questions and expressing curiosity about the monument. The heritage walk helped them understand that history is not confined to textbooks but remains alive in the buildings, roads, neighbourhoods and cultural heritage around us. Teachers observed that such initiatives help students develop a stronger connection with local history.

Officials from India Tourism, Om Bade and Ashish Kumar Singh, along with teachers Mangal Naikwade, Bharat Zhodpe and R. K. Sathe from Dnyaneshwar School, were also present.
