About Department

The Philosophy Department at MGM University, established in November 2022, stands as a testament to the institution's commitment to fostering academic excellence and intellectual exploration. It holds the distinction of being the first University-level Philosophy Department in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, a region deeply rooted in the spiritual and philosophical traditions of Saints.

The inception of this pioneering department was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Dr. D John Chelladurai, Professor & Head, Department of Gandhian Studies and Dr. B. A. Sarate HoD, Economics MGM University Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Their unwavering commitment to the field of philosophy has been instrumental in establishing the department.

Credit is also extended to the honorable trustees of MGM University, who recognized the paramount importance of philosophy as an academic discipline. The visionary outlook of Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vilas Sapkal played a pivotal role in the establishment of the department, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject's significance.

The department offers a range of programs, including MA Philosophy and PhD, with the syllabus for MA Philosophy thoughtfully designed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. MGM University places significant emphasis on innovative departments, with Philosophy being recognized as a cornerstone, often referred to as the "mother of all Sciences."

Courses in the department are conducted in English, Hindi, and Marathi, reflecting the commitment to cater to diverse linguistic backgrounds. Philosophy, inherently holistic and interdisciplinary in nature, encourages students to delve into fundamental questions of existence, knowledge, ethics, and meaning, transcending disciplinary boundaries and nurturing critical thinking and a comprehensive education.
